Villa Milagro Vineyards

The first time I visited Villa Milagro, I was packed in a car with five friends on a cold February day, and our car got stuck in a snow bank along their long driveway. Owner Steve Gambino used a tractor to pull us out, and then his wife Audrey graciously offered us a free tasting. The family's hospitality is matched by the beauty of their vineyard, which is located on a mountaintop overlooking the Delaware River near Finesville. Villa Milagro, which is Spanish for "house of miracles," was first planted in 2003, and opened to the public four years later.

The Gambinos only make a handful of wines, but all the grapes are grown organically. In fact, this is the only organic winery in New Jersey. There is a tourist train from Phillipsburg to Villa Milagro on Saturdays and Sundays from May to October. This steam locomotive runs along the scenic Delaware River, and has a winery car which is decorated with grapevines and tea lights. Try Rosita, a semi-sweet blend of Muscat Blanc and hybrid grapes. This blush wine has slight bite and would pair well with Gouda cheese.
